AMSOIL Oil Filtration

Engine oil carries contaminants away from lubricated components as it circulates through the engine. Effective filtration removes these contaminants before they can continue circulating through bearings, journals and other critical surfaces while still allowing the lubrication system to maintain the oil flow the engine requires.

AMSOIL filtration products cover two complementary approaches: high-quality full-flow engine oil filters for routine filtration and supplementary bypass filtration systems for applications where exceptionally fine contaminant removal and long-term oil cleanliness are priorities.

Full-Flow Engine Oil Filters

A conventional engine oil filter forms part of the engine's full-flow lubrication system. It must remove contaminants while allowing sufficient oil to reach the engine across a wide range of operating conditions.

This creates an important engineering balance. Finer filtration can capture smaller particles, but increasingly restrictive media can also reduce oil flow. A full-flow filter must therefore provide effective contaminant removal without compromising the oil supply required by the engine.

AMSOIL offers several full-flow oil filter families for different vehicles and service requirements, including Ea15K and premium extended-service EaO filters for compatible automotive applications, EaOM and EaOMC motorcycle filters and EaHD filters for heavy-duty applications.

Ea15K and EaO Oil Filters

AMSOIL Ea15K Oil Filters provide high-quality filtration for compatible passenger-car and light-vehicle applications using more conventional service intervals.

AMSOIL EaO Oil Filters are the premium extended-service option, designed with greater service capability for applications where longer oil and filter intervals are appropriate.

The longer service capability of a filter does not by itself determine how long engine oil should remain in service. Oil-change intervals must still be appropriate for the lubricant, engine, operating conditions and maintenance requirements.

Motorcycle Oil Filters

AMSOIL EaOM and EaOMC filters provide filtration for compatible motorcycle applications. EaOM filters use a black exterior finish, while EaOMC filters provide a chrome finish for motorcycles where the exposed oil filter forms part of the bike's appearance.

Correct fitment remains essential regardless of appearance. Oil filters should be selected according to the motorcycle and engine application rather than simply matching the physical dimensions or thread.

Heavy-Duty Filtration

Commercial diesel engines and heavy equipment can accumulate substantial operating hours while carrying large oil volumes and operating under sustained load. Filtration requirements must therefore be considered as part of the engine's overall maintenance program.

What Is Bypass Filtration?

Bypass filtration adds a second filtration circuit alongside the engine's normal full-flow oil filter. Instead of attempting to pass the engine's entire oil supply through extremely fine filtration media, a bypass system diverts a small proportion of the oil and filters it much more slowly.

Because engine oil flow is not dependent on passing the entire pump output through the bypass element, much finer filtration can be achieved without imposing the same restriction on the engine's primary lubrication circuit.

The filtered oil is returned to the engine and the process continues while the engine operates, progressively removing very fine contaminants from the total oil supply.

Full-Flow and Bypass Filtration Work Together

Bypass filtration should not be viewed as a replacement for the engine's normal oil filter. The two systems perform complementary roles.

The full-flow filter continuously processes the oil being supplied to the engine while maintaining the flow required for lubrication. The bypass filter processes a smaller quantity of oil through finer filtration media to target contaminants that may remain suspended after conventional full-flow filtration.

This approach can be particularly valuable in diesel engines and other high-use applications where fine particles, soot and long-term oil cleanliness are significant considerations.

Filtration and Engine Wear

Engine wear is influenced by many factors, including lubricant quality, contamination, operating temperature, air filtration, fuel dilution, engine condition and maintenance practices.

Oil filtration specifically addresses contamination circulating within the lubricant. Removing abrasive particles reduces the quantity of solid material repeatedly passing through lubricated clearances and contacting engine surfaces.

Better filtration does not eliminate the need for appropriate engine oil or good maintenance, but contamination control is an important part of protecting an engine over its service life.

Oil Filters Are Application-Specific

Two filters that look similar externally are not necessarily interchangeable. Thread size and sealing dimensions are only part of the design.

Depending on the application, filters can differ in filtration media, flow capacity, bypass-valve calibration, anti-drainback-valve design, internal construction and pressure requirements.

For this reason, a filter should be selected by the correct vehicle or engine application rather than by appearance or by finding another filter that happens to fit the mounting thread.

Filtration Does Not Make Engine Oil Permanent

Removing contaminants can help maintain oil cleanliness, but filtration cannot reverse every form of lubricant degradation. Engine oil is also affected by oxidation, additive depletion, fuel dilution, moisture, viscosity change and contamination that may not be removable through filtration alone.

This is particularly important when considering bypass filtration and extended service. Longer filter capability should be used as part of an appropriate maintenance program rather than as justification for indefinite oil use.
