AMSOIL Industrial Lubricants
Industrial equipment places very different demands on lubricants from ordinary automotive applications. Hydraulic systems, air compressors, industrial gearboxes and wind turbines can operate continuously under high loads and temperatures while lubricant condition has a direct influence on equipment reliability, maintenance requirements and operating costs.

Compressor Oils
Air compressors expose lubricants to heat, continuous circulation and extended operating periods. Compressor oil must lubricate moving components while resisting oxidation, deposits and foaming and separating effectively from water generated through condensation.
AMSOIL Synthetic Compressor Oils are available in ISO 32, ISO 46, ISO 68 and ISO 100 viscosity grades for a variety of compressor designs and operating requirements. AMSOIL SIROCCO Synthetic Compressor Oil provides an additional specialised option for rotary screw compressors and vacuum pumps.
The familiar SAE descriptions appearing on some compressor oils should not be taken to mean that an ordinary automotive engine oil is an equivalent replacement. Compressor oils use formulations developed specifically around compressor lubrication requirements.
Hydraulic Oils
Hydraulic oil transmits power while also lubricating pumps, motors, valves and other components, removing heat and helping protect the system against wear, corrosion and deposits.

Wind Turbine and Severe-Service Industrial Lubrication
Wind turbines demonstrate why industrial lubricant selection can extend well beyond choosing an oil viscosity. A single turbine can require specialised lubricants for its main gearbox, pitch and yaw drives, hydraulic systems, bearings and other components, together with dedicated products for gearbox flushing, cleaning and cooling-system maintenance.

Premium Lubricants Need to Make Commercial Sense
Industrial lubricant selection is both a technical and commercial decision. A premium synthetic lubricant can offer meaningful advantages in oxidation resistance, temperature performance, deposit control and lubricant life, but those capabilities must provide value in the particular application.
A large hire fleet purchasing substantial quantities of lubricant may place significant emphasis on initial cost per litre. An owner-operator maintaining a critical excavator, compressor or other machine may view the calculation differently because downtime, component failure and lost work are costs they carry directly.
Neither approach changes the equipment's minimum lubricant requirements. The first priority is always to select a product with the appropriate viscosity and performance characteristics. From there, the value of additional lubricant performance can be considered against the equipment's workload, maintenance strategy, expected service life and cost of downtime.
The Cost of Lubricant vs the Cost of Equipment
Industrial machinery can contain large lubricant volumes, making the price of an oil change highly visible. However, lubricant cost should also be considered in the context of the equipment being protected.
Pumps, compressors, hydraulic motors, bearings and industrial gearboxes can be expensive to repair or replace. In critical equipment, the associated labour, lost production and downtime can exceed the lubricant cost many times over.
This does not mean that the highest-priced lubricant is automatically the correct choice. It means that lubricant value should be assessed as part of the machine's overall operating and maintenance cost rather than solely by comparing container prices.
Viscosity Numbers Are Not Quality Ratings
Industrial lubricants frequently use ISO viscosity grades such as ISO 22, ISO 32, ISO 46, ISO 68, ISO 100 or ISO 320. A higher number simply represents a more viscous lubricant; it does not indicate a higher level of quality or protection.
An ISO 100 compressor oil is not inherently better than an ISO 46 compressor oil, just as an ISO 68 hydraulic oil is not automatically better suited to heavy equipment than ISO 32. Correct viscosity depends on the component design, operating temperature and manufacturer's requirements.
Cleanliness and Contamination Control
Even a premium lubricant cannot compensate indefinitely for poor contamination control. Water, dirt, wear debris and degraded lubricant can contribute to component wear, corrosion, deposits and unreliable operation.
Industrial lubricant management should therefore consider filtration, breathers, seals, storage, transfer equipment and maintenance procedures alongside the oil itself. Keeping contamination out of a system can be just as important as selecting the lubricant that goes into it.
Before Selecting an Industrial Lubricant
For industrial applications, begin by identifying the equipment manufacturer and model, component being lubricated, required viscosity and lubricant specification, current lubricant and operating conditions.
