AMSOIL Lubricants for Wind Turbine Applications
Wind turbines place demanding and highly specialised requirements on lubricants. Main gearboxes, pitch and yaw drives, hydraulic systems, bearings and auxiliary systems can operate under high loads, changing temperatures and extended service intervals while access for maintenance may be difficult and expensive.

Wind Turbine Lubrication Systems
A wind turbine does not rely on a single lubricant. Different systems within the turbine operate under very different conditions and can require specialised oils or greases selected for the component, load, temperature range and equipment-manufacturer requirements.

Main Gearbox Lubrication
The main gearbox is one of the most demanding lubrication applications within a geared wind turbine. Gear and bearing surfaces can be subjected to high loads, changing speeds and severe operating conditions while the lubricant may remain in service for extended periods.
AMSOIL Synthetic Power Transmission EP Gear Oil GEN2 (PTN GEN2) is a premium synthetic PAO extreme-pressure gear oil developed for wind turbine and industrial gearboxes operating in severe service. The ISO 320 formulation combines a high viscosity index with extreme-pressure protection and strong low-temperature performance.
PTN GEN2 is currently the principal AMSOIL Industrial wind-turbine product available through AMSOIL Australia.
Pitch and Yaw Gearboxes
Pitch systems adjust the angle of the turbine blades, while the yaw system positions the nacelle relative to wind direction. The associated gearing and bearings can experience high loads and shock loading despite operating differently from the continuously working main gearbox.
AMSOIL GISEP Synthetic Industrial EP Gear Oils are available internationally across a broad range of ISO viscosity grades for severe-service gears and bearings, including wind turbine pitch and yaw gearbox applications.
Hydraulic Systems
Wind turbines can contain hydraulic systems for braking and other control functions. These systems require hydraulic fluids capable of providing dependable wear protection and operation across the environmental conditions experienced by the turbine.
The AMSOIL Industrial wind portfolio includes zinc-containing and zinc-free hydraulic oils as well as specialised multi-viscosity formulations. Different products are available for equipment requiring particular additive chemistry, viscosity or temperature performance.
Low-Temperature Hydraulic Performance
Wind turbines can operate in environments where cold startup performance becomes particularly important. Hydraulic oil that becomes excessively viscous at low temperature can reduce fluid flow and affect system response until operating temperature increases.
AMSOIL THB Synthetic Turbine Hydraulic Oil is an ISO 32 ultra-high-viscosity-index synthetic hydraulic fluid developed for industrial and wind turbine brake applications operating in subzero conditions, where strong low-temperature fluidity is particularly important.
Main Bearing and Open Gear Greases
Wind turbine grease applications also differ substantially within the same machine. Main bearings require dependable mechanical stability and protection against wear and corrosion, while exposed pitch and yaw gearing can place greater emphasis on adhesion, shock-load protection and resistance to water washout.
AMSOIL Industrial offers specialised greases for these applications, including GRXDP460 Synthetic XDP 460 Grease for wind turbine main bearings and GRCSMA Open Gear Grease for heavily loaded pitch and yaw gearing.
Gearbox Flushing and Cleaning
Changing gearbox oil does not necessarily remove every contaminant or deposit from a gearbox. Residual sludge, varnish, degraded lubricant and other contamination can remain within the system and affect the condition of newly installed oil.
The AMSOIL Industrial wind range includes dedicated products for gearbox maintenance. AM1194 Power Transmission Flushing Oil is designed to flush contaminants during oil changes, while AM0005C Cleaning Agent assists in removing sludge, varnish and additive fallout from wind and industrial gearboxes.
These are maintenance products rather than long-term replacement gear lubricants.
Wind Turbine Cooling Systems
Lubrication is not the only fluid requirement within a wind turbine. AMSOIL HD Engine Antifreeze/Coolant 50/50 Premix is also listed by AMSOIL Industrial for wind-turbine-converter coolant applications, providing another part of the broader turbine fluid-maintenance portfolio.
Why Lubricant Performance Matters in Wind Turbines
