Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil for Environmentally Sensitive Applications

Hydraulic equipment operating in forests, waterways and other environmentally sensitive areas presents a particular lubrication challenge. Hydraulic systems operate under pressure and contain substantial quantities of oil, meaning a failed hose, damaged fitting or component leak can release lubricant directly into the surrounding environment.

AMSOIL Biodegradable ISO 46 Hydraulic Oil (BHO) is designed for hydraulic applications where environmental impact is an important consideration and an appropriate biodegradable hydraulic lubricant is required.

Why Use Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil?

Conventional hydraulic oil can remain in the environment following a spill or leak. Biodegradable hydraulic fluids are formulated to break down more readily, making them particularly relevant where mobile hydraulic equipment operates in areas in which accidental lubricant release could have significant environmental consequences.

These applications can include forestry and land-management equipment, machinery operating near waterways and other environmentally sensitive worksites.

Forestry and Mobile Equipment

Forestry equipment is a particularly important application for biodegradable hydraulic fluid. Excavators, harvesters, forwarders and other hydraulically operated machinery can work directly on unsealed ground and in environmentally sensitive areas while using numerous high-pressure hoses and hydraulic connections.

A hydraulic leak in these conditions is not simply a maintenance problem. The location in which the lubricant is released can make environmental performance an important part of fluid selection.

Biodegradable Does Not Mean General-Purpose

A biodegradable hydraulic oil should still satisfy the lubrication requirements of the hydraulic system. Pumps, valves and other components continue to require appropriate viscosity, wear protection, oxidation resistance and dependable operation across the equipment's working temperature range.

BHO is an ISO 46 hydraulic fluid, so the equipment manufacturer's viscosity and lubricant requirements should be confirmed before use. Environmental characteristics do not make an ISO 46 product suitable for a system requiring a different viscosity or incompatible fluid type.

Why Is Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil More Expensive?

Biodegradable hydraulic fluids are specialised lubricants produced for applications requiring both hydraulic-system performance and improved environmental characteristics. They should therefore not be compared solely on price per litre with conventional mineral hydraulic oils intended for general industrial service.

Where biodegradable fluid is specified because of the operating environment, site requirements or equipment application, the relevant comparison is between suitable biodegradable hydraulic fluids rather than between biodegradable and conventional hydraulic oil.

Choosing BHO

AMSOIL Biodegradable ISO 46 Hydraulic Oil is intended for applications requiring an appropriate ISO 46 biodegradable hydraulic lubricant. Confirm the equipment manufacturer's lubricant requirements and any environmental, contractual or site-specific requirements before selecting a hydraulic fluid.

Where biodegradability is not required, AMSOIL Anti-Wear, Multi-Viscosity and Commercial Grade Hydraulic Oils provide alternative options for conventional hydraulic applications.
