Choosing the Right Power Steering Fluid
Hydraulic power steering systems rely on fluid to transmit hydraulic pressure while lubricating and protecting the pump, steering gear, valves, seals and other internal components. The fluid must provide consistent hydraulic performance across changing temperatures while resisting wear, oxidation and foaming throughout its service life.
AMSOIL synthetic power steering fluids are formulated for compatible automotive and light-truck applications, providing dependable hydraulic performance and component protection in systems requiring the appropriate fluid specifications.
Not Every Power Steering System Uses the Same Fluid
Power steering fluid requirements vary considerably between vehicle manufacturers and steering-system designs. Some vehicles specify a dedicated power steering fluid, while others use a particular automatic transmission fluid or manufacturer-specific hydraulic fluid.
For this reason, a fluid should not be selected simply because it is labelled “power steering fluid”. Always confirm the specification required by the vehicle manufacturer and ensure the product is suitable for that particular system.
Why Fluid Viscosity Matters
Power steering fluid must flow readily during cold starts while maintaining sufficient viscosity to protect the pump and other components as operating temperatures rise. Fluid that is inappropriate for the system can affect steering assistance, pump operation and overall system performance.
A quality synthetic fluid provides strong low-temperature fluidity while resisting viscosity loss and lubricant breakdown at elevated operating temperatures.
Heat, Oxidation and Wear Protection
Power steering pumps continuously circulate fluid at high pressure whenever hydraulic steering assistance is required. Heat generated during operation can accelerate oxidation and fluid deterioration, particularly in demanding conditions or systems operating with limited fluid capacity.
Synthetic power steering fluid provides resistance to oxidation and helps protect pumps and other internal components against wear while maintaining dependable hydraulic operation.
Power Steering Fluid Is Not Always a Lifetime Fluid
Power steering fluid can deteriorate with age and use even where a manufacturer does not specify a frequent replacement interval. Heat, oxidation, contamination and component wear can gradually affect the condition of the fluid.
Darkened, contaminated or burnt-smelling fluid can indicate deterioration, while noise from the power steering pump or changes in steering assistance may justify inspection of the fluid level, condition and system for leaks or other faults.
Hydraulic vs Electric Power Steering
Many modern vehicles use electric power steering and therefore have no hydraulic power steering fluid to service. Other vehicles use electro-hydraulic systems in which an electric motor drives a hydraulic pump, and these systems still require the correct hydraulic fluid.
Confirm the type of steering system fitted to the vehicle before purchasing power steering fluid or attempting a fluid service.
