Built for Competition: Inside AMSOIL DOMINATOR Racing Oil

Building an engine capable of producing serious horsepower involves considerably more than adding displacement, compression and aggressive camshaft profiles. Every component must withstand forces and operating conditions far beyond those experienced in a conventional production engine.

And while the pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft and valvetrain attract much of the attention, there's another component performing an equally important job: the engine oil.

AMSOIL DOMINATOR Synthetic Racing Oil is developed specifically for the demands of competition engines, where extreme loads, high temperatures and sustained high-RPM operation place exceptional demands on the lubricant.

To understand why dedicated racing oils exist, it helps to look at what happens inside an engine built for competition.

What Makes a Racing Engine So Demanding?

High-performance engines can operate under conditions that place enormous stress on their internal components.

Increased cylinder pressures transmit greater forces through the pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft bearings. Aggressive camshaft profiles and higher valve-spring pressures increase loads throughout the valvetrain, while sustained high engine speeds expose the lubricant to intense mechanical shear.

At the same time, high power output generates substantial heat that must be managed by the engine's cooling and lubrication systems.

Engine oil must maintain a protective film between heavily loaded moving components while resisting viscosity loss, oxidation and thermal breakdown.

These requirements help explain why a lubricant formulated specifically for competition can differ considerably from an engine oil intended for normal road use.

Maintaining Oil Film Strength Under Extreme Loads

One of the most important functions of engine oil is to maintain separation between moving components.

Within crankshaft and connecting rod bearings, a hydrodynamic oil film helps support the loads transmitted through the rotating assembly. The thickness and stability of this film depend on factors including oil viscosity, operating temperature, engine speed, bearing clearances and applied load.

As engine loads and temperatures increase, maintaining adequate oil film strength becomes increasingly important.

AMSOIL DOMINATOR is formulated with synthetic base oils and a specialised additive system designed to provide protection under the high loads and temperatures encountered in racing engines.

However, there is no single viscosity suitable for every competition engine. Bearing clearances, oil temperatures, engine design and intended operating conditions all influence the appropriate lubricant selection.

This is why choosing racing oil requires more consideration than simply selecting the thickest available grade.

High-Zinc Protection for Highly Loaded Components

Competition engines often use aggressive camshaft profiles, increased valve lift and substantial valve-spring pressures to support high-RPM operation.

These modifications can increase contact stresses throughout the valvetrain, particularly in engines equipped with flat-tappet camshafts.

Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) is an anti-wear additive used in engine oils to protect surfaces operating under conditions where a complete lubricating oil film cannot always be maintained.

AMSOIL DOMINATOR uses an anti-wear additive system developed around the requirements of high-performance and racing engines.

High zinc content alone does not determine whether an oil is suitable for a particular engine. The complete formulation, viscosity and operating conditions must also be considered.

For a detailed explanation of ZDDP and its role in engine protection, read our guide to high-zinc engine oils.

Reducing Friction Without Sacrificing Protection

Every engine loses some of its available power to friction between moving components.

Bearings, piston rings, camshaft components and other moving surfaces all contribute to mechanical losses.

In motorsport, reducing these losses can help improve the amount of engine power available at the crankshaft, provided adequate protection is maintained.

AMSOIL DOMINATOR incorporates friction-modifying chemistry designed to reduce frictional losses while maintaining protection under competition operating conditions.

The objective is not simply to make the oil as thin as possible. A successful racing lubricant must balance friction reduction with the viscosity and film strength required by the engine.

Heat, Viscosity and Oil Stability

Competition engines can expose oil to elevated temperatures, especially during sustained high-load operation.

As temperature increases, oil viscosity naturally decreases. The lubricant must remain sufficiently viscous to protect heavily loaded components while continuing to circulate effectively throughout the engine.

Mechanical shear can also affect the viscosity of certain multigrade oils, particularly when viscosity-index improvers experience permanent degradation.

AMSOIL DOMINATOR is engineered for thermal stability and resistance to viscosity loss under demanding racing conditions.

Maintaining the appropriate viscosity throughout an event helps the lubricant continue protecting bearings, valvetrain components and other critical engine surfaces.

AMSOIL DOMINATOR in Australian Motorsport

Technical specifications and laboratory testing help explain how racing lubricants are designed, but motorsport provides the environment in which these formulations are put to work.

Across Australia, engine builders, racers and performance workshops rely on carefully selected lubricants to protect substantial investments in competition machinery.

Two AMSOIL customers with strong connections to Ford V8 performance are KING 2V and TOCA Performance. Both use AMSOIL DOMINATOR 15W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil (RD50) in their competition engine applications.

KING 2V — Nine-Second Cleveland-Powered Falcon

One example of the demands placed on a competition engine comes from AMSOIL customer Steve and his 1970 Falcon GT, known as KING 2V.

After years of development, Steve recorded a personal-best quarter-mile elapsed time of 9.053 seconds at 147.01 mph.

Providing the power is a 427 cubic-inch Cleveland V8 featuring Trick Flow 2V cylinder heads, a 14:1 compression ratio and more than 800 horsepower on VP109 racing fuel.

Producing that level of performance from a naturally aspirated V8 places substantial demands on its internal components and supporting systems.

Steve selected AMSOIL lubricants throughout the drivetrain:

Performance at this level reflects the combined work of the engine builder, vehicle owner, component manufacturers and the complete drivetrain setup. Lubricant selection is one part of ensuring the mechanical package is prepared for competition.

TOCA Performance — Small-Block Ford Specialists

Queensland-based TOCA Performance is another AMSOIL customer with a strong connection to Australian motorsport.

Specialising in high-performance engine building, TOCA Performance has extensive experience with small-block Ford engines, preparing engines for demanding performance and competition applications.

As both an engine builder and AMSOIL reseller, TOCA Performance uses AMSOIL DOMINATOR 15W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil (RD50) in its own engines and supplies the lubricant to customers.

For an engine builder, lubricant selection forms part of the overall engine package. Bearing clearances, component design, expected operating temperatures and intended engine use all contribute to determining the appropriate oil viscosity and formulation.

TOCA Performance's use of DOMINATOR RD50 provides another real-world example of purpose-built racing oil being selected for high-performance Ford V8 applications.

Choosing the Right DOMINATOR Racing Oil

AMSOIL DOMINATOR Synthetic Racing Oil is available in five viscosity grades to suit different engine designs and competition applications.

Choosing the appropriate oil involves considering bearing clearances, expected oil temperatures, engine operating speeds, fuel type and recommendations from the engine builder.

For example, a purpose-built drag racing engine may have significantly different lubrication requirements from an endurance racing engine, even when both produce similar horsepower.

Both KING 2V and TOCA Performance use DOMINATOR 15W-50 (RD50), but that doesn't mean the same viscosity is appropriate for every competition engine.

Important: Oil pressure alone should not determine viscosity selection. Consult your engine builder and consider the complete lubrication requirements of your engine before selecting a racing oil.

Why DOMINATOR Isn't Intended for Ordinary Road Servicing

Racing oils are developed around the operating conditions and maintenance practices of competition engines.

Unlike conventional passenger vehicles, racing engines may have their oil changed after an event, after several events or according to an engine-specific maintenance schedule.

DOMINATOR prioritises protection and performance under extreme competition conditions rather than extended road-car service intervals.

It is not intended as a universal replacement for engine oils specified for modern passenger vehicles, particularly those requiring specific API, ILSAC, ACEA or manufacturer approvals.
