Why Zinc Matters in Classic Engines
Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, commonly known as ZDDP, is an anti-wear additive that forms a protective sacrificial film on highly loaded metal surfaces. It is particularly important in engines using flat-tappet camshafts, where the contact between the cam lobe and lifter can produce significant pressure.
Z-ROD contains high levels of ZDDP to protect these components and other areas susceptible to wear. That does not mean every engine benefits from simply using the oil with the most zinc; the lubricant should always suit the engine design, operating conditions and manufacturer requirements.

High Zinc Does Not Automatically Mean Better
Z-ROD is a specialised lubricant. Modern vehicles designed around current API and ILSAC specifications may require oils with different additive chemistry, viscosity characteristics and emissions-system compatibility.
If your vehicle specifies a modern passenger-car engine oil, use an oil that meets the required specification rather than selecting a lubricant solely because it contains more zinc.
