AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil for Hybrid Engines
Hybrid vehicles reduce fuel consumption by allowing the petrol engine to shut down whenever it is not required. That is excellent for efficiency, but it also creates an operating cycle very different from a conventional vehicle whose engine runs continuously throughout the journey.
Frequent engine starts, short periods of operation and extended periods with the engine switched off can create unique challenges involving moisture, fuel dilution, corrosion and rapid lubrication when the engine starts again. AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Hybrid Motor Oil is formulated specifically around those operating conditions.
An Engine That Doesn't Always Run
A hybrid engine may stop and restart many times during normal driving. Depending on the vehicle and journey, it may also operate for relatively short periods before switching off again.
- Frequent automatic engine starts and stops
- Short periods of internal-combustion operation
- More opportunities for condensation to remain in the oil
- A need for rapid oil circulation when the engine engages
A Different Lubrication Challenge
A hybrid powertrain may reduce how often the engine runs, but that does not mean engine-oil requirements disappear. In some areas, the hybrid operating cycle places additional demands on the lubricant.
- Protection against condensation-related corrosion
- Management of water contamination
- Resistance to the effects of fuel dilution
- Controlled low-temperature viscosity for rapid startup protection
AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Hybrid Motor Oil
The AMSOIL Hybrid Motor Oil range covers three low-viscosity grades commonly specified for modern petrol-electric vehicles. Always use the viscosity and lubricant specification required by the vehicle manufacturer.
ULTRA-LOW VISCOSITY
AMSOIL Hybrid 0W-8
Purpose-built hybrid protection for newer vehicles requiring an SAE 0W-8 motor oil, with low-temperature viscosity control and JASO GLV-1 licensing.

HYBRID ENGINE OIL
AMSOIL Hybrid 0W-16
Designed for hybrid vehicles requiring SAE 0W-16, combining rapid oil flow with protection against corrosion, deposits, water contamination and fuel dilution.

HYBRID ENGINE OIL
AMSOIL Hybrid 0W-20
Purpose-built synthetic protection for the many hybrid vehicles specifying SAE 0W-20, with emphasis on cleanliness, corrosion protection and viscosity control.

The hybrid operating cycle can create conditions that are less common in a continuously running internal-combustion engine.
Corrosion Protection
Enhanced inhibitors help protect engine components against corrosion associated with condensation and intermittent engine operation.
Water Management
Elevated dispersant levels help manage water that can enter the lubricant through condensation.
Fuel Dilution
Robust viscosity helps combat the negative effects of fuel dilution that can occur during repeated short operating cycles.
Rapid Startup Protection
Controlled low-temperature viscosity allows the oil to flow quickly when the petrol engine engages and lubrication is immediately required.
Different Hybrid Systems, Same Internal-Combustion Reality
The word hybrid covers several different powertrain designs. A familiar Toyota Prius can move using its petrol engine, electric motor or a combination of both. Other systems, such as Nissan's e-POWER arrangement, use the petrol engine primarily to generate electricity while the electric motor provides propulsion.
Those systems operate differently, but they have one important thing in common: there is still an internal-combustion engine containing engine oil.
The correct lubricant therefore remains important even when the petrol engine is not mechanically driving the wheels all of the time.
Which AMSOIL Hybrid Oil Does My Vehicle Need?
Start with the viscosity and lubricant specification specified by the vehicle manufacturer, then select the corresponding AMSOIL Hybrid Motor Oil where applicable.
| Required Viscosity | AMSOIL Hybrid Motor Oil | Typical Selection |
|---|---|---|
| 0W-8 | AMSOIL Hybrid 0W-8 | Newer hybrid applications specifically requiring SAE 0W-8 |
| 0W-16 | AMSOIL Hybrid 0W-16 | Hybrid applications specifying SAE 0W-16 |
| 0W-20 | AMSOIL Hybrid 0W-20 | Hybrid applications specifying SAE 0W-20 |
Does a Hybrid Have to Use Hybrid-Specific Oil?
Not necessarily. The vehicle manufacturer specifies the required viscosity and lubricant performance level, and more than one correctly specified motor oil may be suitable for a particular hybrid vehicle.
Hybrid Motor Oil is AMSOIL's purpose-built option for owners who want a formulation developed specifically around the hybrid drive cycle, including increased stop/start operation, condensation, corrosion and fuel-dilution concerns.
This makes it a specialised choice rather than an excuse to ignore the original vehicle specification. The correct viscosity and performance requirements still come first.
